FIRE DISTRICTS
What is a Fire District?
Fire districts are independent agencies that are governed by a Board of Fire Commissioners who are elected by public vote or any registered voter who resides within the boundaries of the fire district. Each fire district has 5 fire commissioners who serve a 5 year term. Typically one fire commissioner position is up for election per calendar year.
Funding for the fire districts is provided through property taxes with few other funding sources available such as grants and cell tower leasing. Fire districts cannot receive sales tax revenue or participate in state aid to local governments. The districts can and do take the opportunity to apply for grants.
