MDA & Greenburgh Firefighters
Fill-the-Boot
Greenburgh Firefighters have been working with and supporting the Muscular Dystrophy Association for over 25 years. Each year we head out to our local intersections one day each in June & December to Fill-the-Boot for MDA. We also raise money through other events including our Golf Outing. Through our local population's generosity we have been able to raise tens of thousands of dollars to benefit the children and families impacted by these diseases.
MDA Softball Tournament - Mattie's Boys
Greenburgh Firefighters participate in the annual MDA Softball Tournament held in Maryland each year. In 1995 we were fortunate enough to meet Mattie Stepenak when he was 5 years old. Mattie was diagnosed with neuromuscular disease at a young age, but he never let that stop him from being an inspiration. Mattie & his mother Jeni came out to the ballfield one morning to meet the firefighters playing to raise money for the MDA and to throw out the first pitch. At the age of 5 Mattie provided us with a lasting message to "Just Show Up." Quickly, Mattie & Jeni became family. Our brother Bert "Bubba" Mentrasti took that family bond to a whole other level. It's hard to put into words the bond that Bert & Mattie shared, but Mattie's mother says it best. We invite you to read about it in Bubba's Eulogy delivered by Jeni Stepenak. Although Mattie & Bubba are no longer with us, we continue to play for them. Their dedication to others will live on forever. We will always be Mattie's Boys - " Just Show Up - with Purpose"
